When the pilot lights but the burner drops out

You hold the knob, the pilot catches, you let go, and everything dies. Nine times out of ten that is the thermopile. It generates millivolts from heat alone. Output sags as the probe ages and sulfur film builds on it. The pilot flame also has to wrap the tip correctly. A clogged pilot orifice shifts that flame off target. Spider webbing and lint collect over a summer of sitting idle.

Soot on the glass is a different problem. Direct-vent glass goes slightly hazy early on, which is normal curing. Black deposits are not. Usually a log has been nudged off its locating pins. Flame hits ceramic instead of burning clean. Logs go back exactly as the manufacturer diagram shows, not by eye.

Boston adds its own issues. Vented log sets often sit in pre-1940 open masonry fireplaces with clay tile or parged flues. Gas exhaust is cool and wet, so it condenses and eats old mortar joints. Dampers need a permanent clamp. Conversions usually want a stainless liner sized to the appliance.
