What a chimney cap replacement actually involves

The job starts on the roof, not the ground. Each flue gets measured at the outside of the tile, plus the height it stands above the crown. Then we count openings. A party-wall chimney on a two- or three-family can carry four flues in one stack. The old cap comes off, often rusted solid, sometimes cut free. We brush the tile edges clean before anything new goes on.

Attachment is where cheap work fails. Clay tile cracks when a band clamp is cranked down hard. Single-flue caps should clamp snug, not crushing. Multi-flue covers get lagged into sound crown concrete and sealed at the fasteners. Screws driven into a crumbling parged crown pull out by spring.
