What Boston Homeowners Get From a Visit
-
We stock stainless caps and dampers for the common Boston flue sizes on the truck, so most cap jobs finish the same visit.
-
We work on Heatilator, Heat and Glo, Majestic, Napoleon, Superior and Empire gas inserts, including pilot assemblies, thermocouples and blowers.
-
We do not do masonry, so if your crown or brickwork is spalling from freeze thaw, we tell you on the phone before we book a visit.
-
From November through March we hold two slots a day for no heat gas calls in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Dorchester and Somerville.
Chimney Sweep Questions Boston Homeowners Ask Us
How often should a chimney in Boston actually be swept?
It comes down to how hard you run the thing. A Back Bay fireplace lit a dozen times over the holidays is a different animal than a triple-decker woodstove burning nightly from late October through early April, and the heavy user needs a sweep every season while the occasional user can often stretch it. Burning unseasoned wood or damping down low builds creosote faster than anything else. If you cannot remember the last sweep, that alone is reason enough to book one.
What happens during a sweep and inspection visit?
We start at the fireplace with drop cloths down, then check the firebox, damper, smoke chamber and the first stretch of flue. The sweeping itself runs brushes and rods through the flue with a vacuum pulling the whole time, and we scope the liner afterward to see what the brushes left behind. Then we look at the crown, cap and exterior masonry, since freeze-thaw cycling is what opens joints on Boston chimneys. You get told what we found and what, if anything, needs attention.
How long does it take, and will it make a mess in my house?
A standard sweep and inspection usually runs about an hour, longer on a tall downtown flue or if the system has not been touched in years. Mess is the thing people worry about and it is the thing we plan around first: floor coverings, a sealed vacuum at the opening, and tools handled so soot stays in the flue. Rowhouse hallways and narrow Beacon Hill stairs get extra covering. You should not be cleaning up after us.
What are the warning signs I should not ignore?
Smoke rolling back into the room, a draft that refuses to establish no matter how you light it, or a sour campfire smell on a humid August day all point at something in the flue. Birds nesting, leaves and twigs dropping into the firebox, or a cap that went missing after a nor'easter mean the chimney is open to the weather. Falling grit, staining on the wall above the mantel, or a damper that will not move are also worth a call. Any of these, stop using the fireplace until someone looks.
Why does one chimney take more work than the next?
Height and access matter most in Boston. A three-story Federal brick rowhouse with a steep slate roof and no safe ladder setup takes longer than a postwar cape in the outer suburbs. Heavy creosote buildup from years of use means a second pass, and an offset flue or a chimney serving two appliances adds time. Estimates are free, and you will know the number before anyone starts.
Do gas fireplaces need servicing, and can you come out today?
Yes, just not for the same reasons. There is no creosote, but pilot assemblies drift out of adjustment, burner ports clog, logs get moved out of position and the glass hazes over, and we service Heatilator, Heat & Glo, Majestic, Napoleon, Superior and Empire units, including the factory-built metal fireboxes common in condo conversions and infill builds. The vent run gets checked too, since salt spray and wind-driven rain off Boston Harbor are hard on terminations. Same-day slots exist, though November through March they go early, so call in the morning.

What Happens After You Call Us
- 1
Call and tell us what the fireplace is doing, or not doing. We book a two hour window, and if the truck runs late, you get a text before the window starts.
- 2
We look at the firebox, the smoke chamber, the flue and the cap, then hand you a firm price. The estimate is free, and if the answer is masonry rebuilding, we say so and charge you nothing.
- 3
We sweep or repair, run the gas unit or build a test fire to confirm the draft, vacuum the hearth and carry the drop cloths out with us. You pay the number we quoted, not a dollar over it.
Call (617) 855-6549 now, describe the smell or the draft, and get a firm number before we touch anything. Book later or not at all.
Reading a Boston stack before anyone climbs it
Stand across the street. Sight the stack against a window frame. Brick leans, usually toward the prevailing weather side. Then look at the mortar color. Gray portland against soft red brick is a repoint that outlived the brick. The joints stay proud. The brick face sheds in flakes onto the roof.
Count the pots and count the fireplaces. Rowhouses in the South End and Charlestown stacked flues side by side in one mass. The thin brick divider between them is the withe. It erodes first, low, where nobody looks. Neighbor smoke in your closet is the usual tell. A camera confirms it.
Abandoned flues cause most of what we find. The fireplace stopped when the boiler went in. Nothing warms that clay anymore. Condensation sits in the tile, salts bloom on the plaster, and the chimney breast smells sour in humid weather.
Triple-deckers in Dorchester, Roslindale and JP run tall unbraced stacks above a flat or shallow roof. Freeze-thaw off the harbor works them loose from the top course down.
Scoping, sweeping, crown and cap work and repointing happen at your house. Liner fabrication is handled off-site. A moving stack gets rebuilt, not pointed.
